Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists Conference 2012 (trade Exhibition) at the SECC

Both Janet and I had the privilege of holding a Tai Chi and Qigong class at the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists Annual Conference 2012 in Glasgow for some of the Podiatry delegates.

The conference this year was held at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow. The area around the centre is really being developed and has many wonderful new buildings. This year the Conference was held over three days from the 11th, 12th, and 13th of October. It had many concurrent sessions with lots of excellent speakers in their chosen fields who really helped to enhance our knowledge of Podiatry. The only problem was that there was so much going on it really was rather like being in a sweet shop. Not knowing what to choose next?

I felt really sorry for the excellent speaker that followed the eminent BBC presenter Professor Brian Cox OBE who gave an insightful talk on the wonders of the solar system and the universe that had all the delegates marvelling in ore. There were lots of trade stands and suppliers in attendance all eager to help us. All the staff in attendance at the SECC were very friendly and eager to please. The whole conference was a great success.

Anyway back to the Tai Chi lesson. Although there was not much information published in the Podiatry handbook on the lesson and it started early in the morning we really had a good attendance.

The lesson commenced with silent standing and balancing of the body. We then did some ‘preps’ to help warm up the delegates and give them a good gentle early morning work out. This was followed by an exercise called balancing the yin and yang chi to help calm the ‘monkey mind’ and breath. We then moved onto a standing post exercise called Wuji (no extremity). We did both the yin and the yang family version of this. The delegates really found this part of the lesson difficult and struggled to stand still for only a few minutes. The importance of doing regular standing was explained to all the delegates. Janet then took up a basic stance known as grasp the bird’s tail. I then demonstrated to the delegates by applying gentle pressure to Janet’s arms, hands, and legs the importance of being ‘sung’. Keeping good structure but being soft like a rubber ball. This level of softness with good structure really surprised the delegates.

We then followed this by doing the first five Tai Chi and Chi Gong exercises. We tried to really emphasise again the importance of good structure from head to toe but relaxed softness and gentle flowing movements. We also emphasised the importance of spreading the feet in Tai Chi to gain a really strong root through Kidney 1. Being Podiatrists the feet were very much in topic. Janet demonstrated the first part of the long form and helped to gently correct the delegates that needed help.

All the delegates thanked us after the session and we thanked them for their kind support. We were asked a lot of questions about the art and it is our hope that some of them will take the art up. A few already practice Tai Chi and really love the health benefits. It is our sincere wish that it has provoked some interest and that the attendees are in a much more informed position to help their patients should they want to know about the benefits of regular Tai Chi practice.
